Lost Padress - Maybe Paradise

Lost Parderss - Maybe Paradise, videostill

The video work “Lost Pardess - Maybe Paradise”, refers to the commercial brand of "Jaffa Oranges", which became a symbol of Israeli pride, modernity and prosperity since the first settlers arrived at the beginning of the 20th century in the Middle East. This commercial and cultural advertisement had the power to formulate a new reality for the Israeli people, by depicting the agricultural success of transforming the dessert into a fruitful place, as a miraculous achievement. Meanwhile the Palestinian side that owned most of the orchards before they were taken from them after 1948, remained in the shadow. No light was shed on the cooperative life which jews and arabs held in the citrus industry before ́48. This working reality was replaced by a romantic idealization of a new Middle East that exports civilized products to Europe. The Persian, Arabic and Hebrew name for orange orchard is ‘Pardess’, and maybe influenced the origin of the word Paradise.
